What does the mantra Om Namah Shivaya mean?
The mantra Om Namah Shivaya means "I respectfully bow to You, Universal Consciousness, who are the embodiment of Goodness".
What does sadhana mean?
Spiritual practice, known as Sadhana in Sanskrit, is the daily discipline carried out by a person who follows a spiritual path guided by the teachings of a Guru.
What is snanam and how is it practiced?

What is japa meditation?
Japa meditation is a practice that involves the mental repetition of the highly vibrational sounds of the mantras. Mantras are sacred sounds that, through their repetition, help us maintain a focused mind, cultivate concentration, and reduce the tendency towards worry and distraction, thereby elevating and purifying our thoughts and emotions to the subtlest levels of the Self.
What is a mala?
How is the practice of japa performed?
Once you have done snanam, sit in front of the mandir with your mala to begin the practice of japa:
- The practice of japa is done with the right hand, passing over the 108 beads of the mala between the thumb and ring or middle finger, while repeating the sacred sounds of the mantra—silently in the mind, aloud, or in a whisper. The index finger is not used, as it symbolizes the ego, and in this practice, we surrender ourselves completely in selfless devotional love.
- Each bead is touched with attention, connecting with its texture, shape, and energy, bringing us into the present moment.
- The 109th bead, which has a tassel, represents the Guru, which marks the beginning and the end of each cycle, and is neither counted nor passed over, as a sign of respect for the Guru. Upon reaching it, the mala is turned and the practice continues in the opposite direction from the last bead touched.
- The mala should not touch the floor, as it is a sacred tool for spiritual practice. You can place a mat, carpet, or blanket to avoid direct contact with the floor. If the mala touches the floor, it should be washed immediately.
- If you begin the practice of japa by reciting the mantra Om Namah Shivaya, know that it is repeated quickly to leave no room in the mind for other thoughts—to avoid distractions, and to maintain undivided attention. This effort of concentration is precisely what helps to purify and calm the mind.
- You can carry your mala with you wherever you go, either stored in a small bag or worn around your neck. If you wear it around your neck, always place the Guru bead behind your neck; only a Master (Guru) wears it at the front.
- Wash and purify the mala once a week or whenever you feel it is necessary at home, although ideally, the maximum purification is done by immersing it in water from a natural source such as a river or stream. Hold the mala with your left hand and, from top to bottom, pass your right hand over the entire mala while repeating the mantra Om Namah Shivaya until you reach the Guru bead; you can repeat this process at least three times. Then hang it up and let it air dry.
The spiritual practice that Mataji teaches us is simple, but to fully experience its benefits, it requires commitment, consistency, and discipline.
What is a mandir, and what does creating one involve?
The mandir is much more than just an altar; it is a sacred space for connection and devotion, a personal portal to the Divinity that radiates light and pure energy in your home. The mandir invites you into a profound and meaningful spiritual practice.
When choosing the place for your mandir, look for a quiet and peaceful space in your home, a corner where you can immerse yourself in your spiritual practice without distractions.
Preparing the mandir is a ritual in itself; the offerings of a candle, incense, and a flower create a bridge between your world and the spiritual realm. Sitting in the presence of your mandir, you begin your japa practice, reciting mantras that will resonate with your Inner Being and the universe. This act of daily devotion not only brings peace and clarity to your mind but also transforms your mandir into a vibrant point of light and energy, elevating the vibration of your home and enriching your life and the lives of those around you.
What is prasad?
Every moment of life is an opportunity to connect with the Divine. Through prasad, we transform the act of preparing and eating into an expression of love and spiritual consciousness.
While cooking, we hold the sacred mantra Om Namah Shivaya in our minds or immerse ourselves in the melody of kirtans. This mindful practice allows us to infuse each ingredient with expansive and loving vibrations, connecting with the Divine Being that resides within them and within us.
Prasad transcends mere physical nutrition. By feeding our bodies, we also nourish our Inner Being, thus strengthening our spiritual connection and feeding our soul.
With prasad, every meal becomes a sacred act of gratitude and connection, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary and elevating each culinary experience into an act of devotion and love.
What is karma yoga?
Karma yoga is the path that leads us to union with God through actions performed with love and selfless dedication to others, without expectations. It is about the offering of our actions to the Universe.
Imagine transforming household chores into a profound spiritual practice. Each time you sweep the floor, prepare a meal, or fold clothes, do so with the mantra Om Namah Shivaya resonating in your heart. With every repetition, your focus, attention, and presence deepen, turning these everyday tasks into acts of love and devotion.
Every action, every moment is an opportunity to deepen your connection with the Divine.
